Q4:
Why did my Budget Plan monthly payment amount change?
A4:

The goal of the Budget Plan is to spread your gas bill over a 12-month period. Every four months, the budget plan is re-evaluated and may be adjusted up or down, or remain the same. The adjustment is determined by the cost of gas, weather, and your individual usage. To prevent large fluctuations in your Budget Plan amount, you may pay more than the suggested Budget Plan amount at any time.

Q9:
Can I provide Nicor Gas with a meter reading during the months you are estimating my meter?
A9:

To keep our administrative costs down, every other month Nicor Gas estimates most of our customers' meter readings based on your previous use and the weather.  Then, on your next bill any difference from your actual use is automatically corrected when we use an actual meter reading.

Even when your meter reading is estimated, you only pay for the gas you actually use.  If you would like to provide an actual reading to Nicor during the months we are scheduled to estimate your reading, log in to My Account and enter your meter reading online.

Q10:
Who should I contact to have my underground utility lines marked?

Before you begin digging on your property, call JULIE (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators) at 811. This statewide, one-call system will inform Nicor Gas and other utilities of your digging or excavating plans. Call no more than two weeks, but at least 48 hours before you begin digging (not including weekends and holidays). Q11:
What should I do if I smell natural gas in or around my home?
A11:

If you smell a faint natural gas odor near an appliance, first check to make sure all pilot lights are lit.  If the odor persists, call us at 1 888 Nicor4u (1 888 642-6748).

If you smell a strong, persistent natural gas odor (or hear natural gas leaking) inside your house, leave the house immediately, leaving doors and windows open as you exit. Do not open windows if they're not already open. Do not use your telephone or cell phone, operate any appliance, light a match or turn light switches on or off because sparks from them could ignite natural gas. Call 911 or Nicor Gas at 1 888 Nicor4u (1 888 642-6748) from a neighboring location.

If you smell a strong natural gas odor (or hear gas leaking) outside your house, call Nicor at 1 888 Nicor4u (1 888 642-6748) or your local fire department. Be sure to keep people away from the suspect area.
